Faizan’s story – providing ICT and education support in Uganda
Back in June, we shared the news from Faizan, from Pakistan, who studied Computing Science at our Aberdeen International Study Centre before progressing to the University of Aberdeen, that he had secured a summer internship with Redearth Education providing training to Ugandan teaching staff in Information and Communication Technology.
Here, he shares with us some of the experiences he had during his time in Uganda.
“While in Uganda, I was responsible for digitalizing 22 tools for data collection, a project that saved costs and improved organizational efficiency. I assisted in developing a database for storing administrative data and played a key role in implementing better information and communications technology (ICT) practices,” Faizan told us. “I also conducted 43 ICT sessions, which included one-on-one sessions with more than 20 staff members, tailored to problem-solving and improving efficiency for the staff. I had the chance to streamline processes and support the team with system-related tasks, such as solving software and hardware issues, and improving overall organizational workflows. The most rewarding part of this was seeing the positive impact my work had on the staff’s day-to-day tasks.”
Outside of the workplace, Faizan had the chance to visit several schools, where he saw firsthand how Redearth’s tools and methods were being applied. “It was a wonderful experience to explore the Ugandan culture by attending local events, music competitions, and even a few weddings,” says Faizan. “I also had the opportunity to visit different cities and go on a safari. I even learned a little bit of the local language, Runyoro, making my interaction with the locals more fun.
“My time at Redearth Education allowed me to grow both personally and professionally. It was an incredible learning opportunity, and I’m excited to carry these skills and insights into my future work.”
Faizan’s story is just one example of where our International Students apply what they have learned to bring about positive change.
