Faizan’s story – heading to Uganda to provide IT training for teachers
We’re proud to know our international students go on after their studies to use the skills and knowledge they gained at our International Study Centres and at university to benefit others, whether in the UK or further afield. Our commitment is to building a better world through education, and the greatest impact we have for good is through people applying what they have learned to bring about positive change.
So we were very pleased to hear the news from Faizan, from Pakistan, who studied Computing Science at our University of Aberdeen International Study Centre before progressing to the University of Aberdeen. Faizan recently secured a summer internship, with Redearth Education, which will be split between the UK and Uganda, where he will be providing training to local staff in Computing Science.
Redearth Education is a charity that supports a network of local teachers through training, support and recognition, working to improve education standards and learning outcomes for all children.
Their vision is for “a future in which every child has an equal chance to succeed, and every community to thrive”. Redearth Education began its Africa projects in Uganda in 2006. They are based in Masindi, in western Uganda, where Faizan will be undertaking the Ugandan part of his internship.
Faizan will be providing technical training in both hardware and software to local teachers. “The curriculum at the University of Aberdeen is not just theoretical,” Faizan told us. “It's both practically-oriented and theoretical - which is the fun part because you get to then practice whatever you learn in the classes in the practical sessions at the university. I grew in confidence hugely during my time at the University and I’m really looking forward to applying these skills to training others.”
We wish Faizan every success with his assignment, and look forward to following his journey and positive impact on the world.
