UK universities praised in latest Guardian guide

  • The Guardian University Guide has recognised strengths in teaching and student support across British higher education in its latest guide and higher education rankings.
  • Five Study Group partner universities are listed in the top 20.

Congratulations are due to UK universities whose work to offer excellent levels of teaching and to support student attainment and wellbeing have again been highlighted in the annual Guardian university guide.

Universities were praised for their work overall including the quality of education provided, facilities and the wider student experience.

Study Group’s university partners featured prominently with five of our partners listed in the UK top 20 - up from three the previous year. These are:

Durham University
The University of Aberdeen
The University of Strathclyde, Glasgow
The University of Surrey
The University of Sheffield

Other partners saw a significant increase in their rankings within the top 100 of 12 places for Teesside University and 11 places for Huddersfield University.

Subject highlights also include several examples of high level ranking nationally:

  • Electrical and electronic Engineering - Leeds (1), Cardiff (4), Sussex (16)
  • Graphic Design - Teesside (1), Kingston (5), Liverpool John Moores (10)
  • Hospitality and Tourism - Strathclyde (5), Leeds Beckett University (7)
  • International Relations - Durham (7), Aberdeen (8), Sheffield (10)
  • Sociology and Social Policy - Strathclyde (4), Aberdeen (5), Huddersfield (7), Surrey (11), Durham (13) and Leeds (18)

This week also saw rankings published by the Daily Mail which saw Durham and Sheffield universities highly placed, and the University of Surrey received an additional accolade as it was shortlisted for the Times Higher Education University of the Year.
