Sharing success - Abdelrahman Elwan’s story to study Bioinformatics
Abdelrahman Elwan is a former Study Group student who has recently completed his studies in BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science at Liverpool John Moores University.
Born and raised in Cairo, Egypt, Abdelrahman always had an ambition to study to a high level. “My family and I appreciate academic and personal growth and are always aiming for a better future, which is why I considered applying to international universities,” Abdelrahman told us. “The opportunity of studying in the UK intrigued me most because this meant learning and experiencing a new culture and environment, whilst in a familiar educational system.
“I was initially introduced to Liverpool John Moores University at a university fair. Liverpool as a city is so lively, diverse, and has many ‘sweet spots’ like the Albert Docks. Moreoever, from an academic perspective it had great reviews for my field with many potential opportunities to broaden career options with an accredited degree.”
Abdelrahman’s time at Liverpool John Moores University International Study Centre was during the COVID-19 pandemic, which made everything more challenging, however he says he was strengthened by the support he received.
“Study Group and its teachers provided additional support from all aspects for students throughout our studies to help make us feel more confident,” says Abdelrahman. “The content I learnt during this time provided me with a solid foundation for the first year of my studies. I studied Biomedical Sciences because it offers a strong biology foundation with such a broad subject range which is great for me because I always wanted to study a biology-related degree. I gained a wide base of knowledge and many unforgettable practical laboratory skills. Looking forward, I aim to complete further studies, such as a master's degree in Bioinformatics while continuing my work experience as a biomedical scientist.”
Abdelrahman’s message to others considering studying at an International Study Centre? “Don’t be afraid to take the step. You learn a lot about yourself, the different cultures and much more. Truly it is such a memorable experience.”
